If you were a building

If you were a building which building would you be?

We recently came across a piece of work, which grabbed our attention.

Federico Babina, an illustrator based in Barcelona, has produced a series of beautifully illustrated and plausible architectural structures, as if several well-known artists had created them. The fun part is that we can recognize the artist (depending on how much time we have spent roaming the museums and galleries of the world) through these caricatures even in a medium they never used.

The work shows how the artists, such as Picasso, Lichtenstein, Dali and Warhol, managed to create unique styles so defined over time that they are easily recognizable through their colours, tones, textures, shapes, structures, scale etc.

In turn, we project all that we know of the artist’s character and nuances on to it. Then, by asking ‘What type of building would I be’, we choose our preferences and use them to reflect how we want the world to regard us.

We like the clear comparison with the branding process.

Consistently and creatively using the elements of a brand’s visual identity system will create the recognition, understanding and engagement with the target audience and let them use the brand to reflect themselves in their own world.

That’s a powerful and valuable relationship to be part of. Take a look for yourselves. Federico’s work can be seen here.

COUNTING DOWN TO DESIGN DAYS DUBAI 2014

The region’s first and leading dedicated design fair, Design Days Dubai, returns for its third edition to deliver a diverse, exhibition-quality collection of compelling, highly-collectible modern and contemporary design pieces and installations, alongside a public programme with leading design personalities and industry experts, from 17 – 21 March 2014. In anticipation of this, the organizers have planned a series of initiatives to whet the appetite of art & design aficionados. One such, is the exhibitor spotlight.

When Alexis Ryngaert established his design gallery in Brussels in 2008 he created Victor Hunt as an alter ego – an approach just as intriguing as the works that have given the gallery its strong and distinct voice in the contemporary design/art world. As seen in the work presented at Design Days Dubai since the fair’s inception, the designers represented by Victor Hunt produce bold pieces, often unexpected employing both new technology and new uses of old technology.

Victor Hunt’s website incorporates a series of beautifully filmed and skillfully edited documentaries following the designers represented through the production of specific works. By bringing production alive, showing it as an organic and often unpredictable process, driven by the materials used, the films also provide insight into each designer’s creative approach – and they highlight what Ryngaert, through Victor Hunt, defines as designart: the grey area where craft, architecture, industrial design, sculpture and other artistic disciplines meet.

Below are three such videos taken from the website. Enjoy!

LETTING THE SENSE OF SOUND GUIDE DESIGN

As a creative design house the sense of sight is, for us, one of the strongest guides when it comes to developing visual identity systems to help a brand project its strongest presence to target audiences. However, below are two interesting TED talk videos that make a case for designing spaces and products for the sense of sound.

The first,  is by Neil Harbisson a cyborg artist who was born with a rare and extreme condition of colour blindness where he only views the world in gray scales. He wears a prosthetic device  — he calls it an “eyeborg” — that allows him to hear the colour spectrum, even those colors beyond the range of human sight. The second TEDtalk, is by Julian Treasure, founder of the Sound Agency, a firm that advises worldwide businesses (offices, retailers, hotels) on how to use sound to encourage productivity, and create ambient spaces that generate positive energy and minimize stress. He sounds a call to action for designers to pay attention to the “invisible architecture” of sound!

A FASCINATING SURVEY OF LIFESTYLE BRANDING

Since we launched our new website a couple of weeks ago, we’ve been busy uploading some of the case studies of client projects we’ve worked on. Over the years Zaman has built a reputation for branding corporate environments and designing event spaces but the project that founder & CEO Grace Yacoub describes as her ultimate is much more bespoke – Kensington Park Gardens.

Located on the largest private garden in London Grace redeveloped this house on behalf of The C Collection property development investment which she co-founded. The Kensington house is a combination of traditional features and contemporary luxury that sit in harmony with Grace’s signature use of bespoke designed furniture all many of which crafted with artists and artisans.

Harmoniously weaving architecture and styling, the house features the garden in every room. The ability of the house to be at once a striking architectural structure while simultaneously blending into the surrounding nature is something that Grace consciously worked to achieve.

“Great architects strive to bring their building in harmony with their environment and the surrounding view. Of course, it makes sense. In every project I design I look to create a comfortable blend between the space and the natural landscape” Grace Yacoub, Zaman Founder.

To read more about work done for Kensington Park Gardens and to see our other projects you can visit our website here

A list of must watch design films

Today’s post is inspired an interesting list of ‘must watch’ documentaries collated by the editorial team at Architectural Digest.com. If you’re into architecture, urban planning or just plain love design then this is probably a good list to bookmark.

Charles & Ray Eames: The Architect and the Painter (2011) – “a frank portrayal of the pair’s professional and personal relationship, at times riddled with tension, and their tremendous contribution not only to furniture design but also film, photography, art, branding, and graphics.” ~AD.com

Sketches of Frank Gehry (2005) – a look at the mastermind behind the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, two of the world’s most recognizable buildings.

Unfinished Spaces (2011) – A revealing portrayal of architecture in post-revolution Cuba. Read more about the film here & 2012 screenings.

How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster? (2010) – “an unsentimental look at the Pritzker Prize winner’s career, narrated by Deyan Sudjic, director of London’s Design Museum.”

Objectified (2009) – A must-see for anyone interested in the often invisible hand of design in our daily lives.” Check out the film’s website here >> Objectifiedfilm.com

The Pruitt-Igoe Myth: An Urban History (2011) – a documentary film about the ways in which the American city changed in the 20th Century; through the lens of the infamous Pruitt-Igoe housing development and the St. Louis residents who called it home. Read more about the film here

My Architect: A Son’s Journey (2003) – the illegitimate son of legendary architect Louis I. Kahn embarks on a 5yr exploratory journey to learn about his father and his inspirations.

Regular or Super: Views on Mies van der Rohe (2005) – “…a terrific primer on his career, from his work in Germany (including a stint as director of the Bauhaus) to his stately masterpiece, the Seagram Building, to his final great work, Berlin’s NeueNationalgalerie.” ~ AD.com

Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman (2008) – a documentary film by Eric Bicker on the career of celebrated architectural photographer Julius Shulman who died aged 95, a year after the film premiered.

Check out Architectural Digest for the entire list & detailed film bios. What other documentaries would you add to the list?
