DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT – THE FATHER OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Today Google featured a sepia-toned doodle, which was in fact the design of a train designed by midcentury industrial designer Raymond Loewy, whose 120th birthday would’ve been today.

Paris-born Raymond Loewy was an industrial designer who achieved fame for the magnitude of his design efforts across a variety of industries. Even if readers may not be familiar with the name Loewy, it is most certain that in some shape of form, whichever part of the world you’re in you have encountered his work – which decorates everything from the Coke Bottle to the USA’s Air Force One.

Based in New York for most of his active career Loewy was incredibly prolific. He worked in period of time before the term “industrial designer” had even been coined. By the time he left, it was a whole profession, with its own trade associations and education curriculum.

Loewy’s successful career was due in large part to the post-War economic boom. According to historical records, his career path included early jobs as a department store display designer, to working on aircraft interiors at the dawn of commercial aviation, to designing cars in the 1940s and 50s—which helped sell the dream of individual car ownership to Americans. During his 50yr career Loewy was responsible for designing the famous Coca-Cola bottle, Lucky Strike cigarette packets and logos for Exxon and Shell. He also created product designs for everything from refrigerators to cars, vending machines, sewing machines, one of IBM’s card punchers and spacecraft.

“…what’s really interesting—and admirable—isn’t how famous Loewy has become, or how influential his work was. It’s that he was happy to try his hand at anything and everything. He saw the modern world as a magical and interconnected series of phenomena, each in need of careful engineering.” – Gizmodo

Happy birthday Raymond Loewy!

DESIGN IN A NUTSHELL

‘Design in a Nutshell’ is an interesting six-part series produced by free learning platform The Open University. Initially published earlier this year in May, the series provides a lowdown on six key design movements that had significant impact on various design disciplines from architecture to the revolution of design education via the introduction of a cross-disciplinary curriculum.

The six disciplines presented in animated primers are: Gothic Revival, Arts & Crafts, Bauhaus, Modernism, American Industrial Design & Postmodernism.

All six animations, which can be viewed on Brain Pickings, are definitely worth a bookmark for design professionals.

SPOTLIGHT: TVC FOR LEBANESE TEXTILE BRAND

A few weeks ago, we were introduced to the work of a Dutch creative studio based in Amsterdam called Onesize. The founders Rogier Hendriks and Kasper Verweij were invited speakers at Visual Arabia 2013 (see a post here on our time at VS). Giving a captivating & humorous presentation, for us they were definitely one of the highlights of the conference. Motion and animation specialists with a client credits list that includes Discovery Channel, NBC Universal and FX tv networks, their work is definitely inspiring and we were particularly impressed by one of their latest projects which they showcased at Visual Arabia. A brand name that’s closer to home below is the director’s cut version of a CG animated TVC they did for Lebanese textile retailer Warde.

What other Arab brands within the region do you know of that have created memorable ads?

THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY IN PICTURES

February 2013 was a busy month for Zaman. Our management team accumulated quite alot of air miles traveling to Qatar and Oman to meet existing & prospective clients. We see this as a really encouraging indicator that in 2013 Arab companies are keen to better align their brand proposition with their core operations; and ultimately are ready to invest in enlisting external support to help them strategically tap opportunities to tie this to the bottom line.

We’ve also begun preparations for this year’s edition of our newsletter Senso, these have included a few in-house photoshoot sessions of some of the project material we created for our clients last year. We are also continuing work on an ongoing project, for which we can’t reveal any details just yet, but some members of them team have spent quite a few hours trawling tailoring workshops in Dubai’s Al Satwa district.

Currently adorning one of our shelves in the office are two handmade ceramic pieces (pictured below) by an artist called Virginia Graham, couriered in from the UK. Her pieces, which range from teapots and cups to jewellery, offer some great ideas for unique gifts. You can read more about her work one her website – VirginiaGraham.co.uk.

We capped off the month by attending a free digital strategy workshop organized by LBi Digital agency. This was the 5th installment of a monthly digital academy workshop which has become a great networking platform for us to catchup with our counterparts from the industry. The free flowing cappuccinos & complimentary generous servings of pancakes provided by MAKE Business Hub cafe in Marina, are an added bonus. ;)

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: JAPAN’S SHIGEO FUKUDA

Alot of the work that we do at Zaman draws inspiration from Eastern-inspired design & culture – from the Middle Eastern craftsmanship to Far East minimalist design influences.

Today’s post is a spotlight on a graphic designer, now late, whose work & the context of the time in which he embarked on his professional career earned him the title “Japan’s consummate visual communicator.”

Shigeo Fukuda was a graphic artist, poster designer and sculptor who created optical illusions. Born in 1932 in Tokyo, it has been cited in many periodicals that Fukuda’s trademark style developed from an early in Swiss style graphic design (also referred as The International Typographic Style, is a graphic design style developed in Switzerland in the 1950s that emphasizes cleanliness, readability and objectivity) and its stark contemporary Japanese work.

“Fukuda’s work experiments boldly with perspective, negative space and the visual and geometric interplay between elements on the page…” via ItsNiceThat

His commercial work, for which he has won accolades such as induction into the Art Director’s Club Hall of Fame, includes: his creation of the official poster for the1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, a 1980 poster created for Amnesty International features a clenched fist interwoven with barbed wire, with the letter “S” in the word “Amnesty” at the top of the poster formed from a linked shackle,  ”Victory 1945″, which is one of his best-known works, featuring a projectile heading straight at the opening of the barrel of a cannon and “1982 Happy Earth Day”, which shows an axe with its head against the ground and a small branch sprouting upwards from its handle. Below are some samples of his distinctive work which are widely available online.

THINGS THAT HAVE INSPIRED US THIS WEEK

With only two weeks left to the end of 2012, here’s a quick roundup post of the things that have inspired us over the last couple of days:

“Taiwanese artist and sculptor Mary Leu creates amazingly realistic and detailed wooden sculptures of fabric-made items that could easily be mistaken for the real things. Transforming mundane laundry—such as socks, towels and underwear—into fascinating works of art, one can actually see the miniscule weaves of fabric imprinted on these wood-carved creations upon closer inspection.” via DesignTaxi

Next up is an interesting TEDx talk on shifting our mindsets from consumption to contribution and what designs emerge if we assume that people want to lead selfless lives. TEDxBerkeley Designing for generosity.

A sneak peek inside Google’s top secret data centers by way of images like the two below featured on the Design Milk website.

One of many Tumblr blogs that we have bookmarked is Merde! Petit-Maitre.

As the year draws to a close, online video hub YouTube has unveiled the top 20 most-watched ads of the year.

Earlier this week, the Google Analytics team released a series of comedic video illustrations of Customer Experience when it comes to online shopping. A must watch for ecommerce brands to reconsider how they can sometimes risk annoying & losing potential customer conversions.

Do you have any interesting content that you’ve recently bookmarked?
