AL AIN PHOTOGRAPHIA AWARD RETURNS IN 2014

Calling all photography and videography enthusiasts: the 2nd edition of the Al Ain Photographia Award kicks off again this February!

In 2011 Zaman Branding had the honour of working with Al Ain City Municipality for the inaugural launch of photo contest Al Ain Photographia Award, click here to read about it. This year we’ve partnered with the city again for the management of this contest campaign and we are taking Al Ain Photographia Award to the next level making it the most innovative and inspiring competition yet. The competition is open to anyone, regardless of age, residency or experience.

The Photographia Award invites participants to submit either photographs or videos in either 1 open video category or one of 3 photo categories; Personalities and Cultural Icons, Sustainability and Lifestyle.

Like 2011, admirable shots of the beautiful and captivating Oasis city of Al Ain will stand a chance to win in either the People’s Choice award category or the grand prize winners chosen by a select panel of Judges. Entries started on 02.02.2014 and will end 16 March 2014.

‘CULTURAL REFLECTIONS’ – THEME FOR EMIRATES PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION 2012

A few days ago we received an email from Sawsan Khamis Musabbah of the team at The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage with information on the 7th session of the Emirati Photography Competition. Those familiar with our work will know that our founder Grace Yacoub & the wider team Zaman are BIG supporters of platforms that celebrate and showcase the arts and elements of culture from our part of the world.

Over the years we’ve been honoured to have collaborated with organizations in the private and public sector on iconic projects such as the inaugural Al Ain Photographia Award, SIKKA art fair and Bastakiya. We are always amazed by just how popular photography has become in the UAE, not just as a hobby but as a profession too. Whether you’re an amateur or a pro, EPC 2012 is definitely worth checking out. Final submission date is September 30th, 2012.

Emirates Photography Competition 2012 – key details:

Objective:

“Under the patronage of International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (ADTCA) is organizing the Seventh Session of the Emirates Photography Competition (EPC) 2012. The aim of the EPC is to develop photography within the United Arab Emirates by attracting as many photographers as possible, whether amateur or professional, by nurturing their talents. EPC intends to achieve this through specialized workshops, interactive meetings, seminars and holding both solo and collective exhibitions inside and outside the country. The EPC also encourages the comprehensive acquisition and publication of photographic works.

2012 Theme

‘Cultural Reflections’ is the main theme this year and is inspired by the work of Iraqi photographer Murad Al-Daghistani (1917-1982); who was a leading photographer in the contemporary Arab photography. Daghistani’s works captures both the everyday life of his subjects as well some creative portraits of the people he encountered. Other general themes include: Nature, Portrait, Sport and Future image by future eyes.

Eligibility

Entry is open to all photographers worldwide, amateur or professional either as an individual or as a group. Entrants can participate in all themes. All winners from outside the UAE will get a five-day invitation inclusive of travel and accommodation costs to attend the completion’s program and award ceremony in Abu Dhabi.

Submission dates

The closing date to receive participating works is September 30, 2012 and the Awards ceremony and exhibition will be held in December 2012. Participants must submit their photographs as digital files which will be uploaded into the website only. All participating works must respect performance values and standards of photographic art, as well as FIAP rules. Prints or e-mail attachments will not be accepted.

Creating the promo video for Al Ain Photographia Award

In a previous post on our work with Al City Municipality for the inaugural Al Ain Photographia Award photography competition in 2011 (see blog post here) Zaman also conceptualized and created the campaign TVC & a promo video for YouTube which is featured above. One of the objectives of the promo video was to emphasize the website as the lead campaign platform for participation in the competition as well as to drop subtle visual cues on how the competition was open for all & the type of entries required, which was achieved through the use of characters in the video of varied ethnicities, depicting them taking photos of various elements of Al Ain – nature, cityscape, heritage etc.

The video concept was also extended to the series of presentations shown during the award ceremony; including a short video presentation by one of the jurors Mohamed Somji also played during the ceremony, which can be viewed here.

Zaman is calling all Design enthusiasts in the Middle East to part of the ” Common Expressions” Design Competition.

As part of an ongoing investigation on how authenticity can be sustained in the Arab culture, Zaman is calling all Design Enthusiasts to be part of Zaman’s Signature Calendar.

“Common Expressions” is a collection of Arab proverbs which we hear everywhere. The challenge is to bring them to life through the eyes of emerging design enthusiasts that will add meaning to them through visual interpretations. Zaman’s Signature Calendar will feature the 12 best art works that will be selected and judged on artistic merit. See below  images of the calendar from previous years.

This competition is a bridge for design enthusiasts and Zaman to make their design commercially viable. The aim of the calendar’s next collection is to introduce new talent to the broad public and business community. The selected designers will feature on Zaman’s Signature Calender which has now become a reference amongst Zaman’s business community. You will receive a copy of the Calender and your art work will reference your name and contact.

Below are the 12 proverbs, pick the one that inspires you the most and start designing, there are no restraints in terms of your art form, the proverb you will choose will be your starting point in terms of inspiration….so start designing away…and go where your inspiration takes you..!

Rules of Entry:

  1. All artwork should be original and individual
  2. Each artist may enter one entry
  3. Selected artwork will be produced in Zaman limited edition calendar and will be shown on display during November 2011.
  4. By entering the Competition, all parties agree that Zaman has the right to Display, copy, and distribute
  5. Submissions not selected will be returned to artists

Judging Criteria:

  1. Entries will be evaluated by Zaman creative team and will be judged on artistic merit

Deadline for Submission: 5th of July
